Campaign to end child slavery

In April, inspired by World Vision Australia's campaign on this issue, Christopher Pyne wrote to the Prime Minister requesting that the Australian Government use its purchasing power to support Fairtrade Chocolate by stocking only Fairtrade Chocolate in vending machines inside Government buildings.

He has also set up a facebook group - Campaign for fairtrade chocolate.

He writes:

As a Liberal, people may ask why I would advocate a market control measure such as this. The problem is that a free market only works where the rule of law applies. There can be no level playing field when justice is so dismembered that some farmers are able to use slave labour.

To know about the abuses taking place is to be faced with a call for action. We can each make a difference.

For those of you who use the facebook website, you might like to join a group that I have started: "Campaign for Fair Trade Chocolate". Included on this page is a list of what World Vision call "fair trade chocolate" that people can enjoy, knowing that all of the cocoa has been sourced from farmers who have been paid a reasonable price, and who have not used slave labour.

"Fair Trade chocolate" may be a little more expensive, but sometimes it is worth paying a little more. Most supermarkets stock some lines, and if your shop doesn't then by asking for it you will be encouraging more shops to start stocking it.

Read the full article on his Facebook site. If you support this issue and are on facebook, join the campaign.

For a list of fairtrade chocolate products visit the Don't Trade Lives website.
